rideLast October, Dean Brian Railsback completed a 110-mile journey on bicycle from Cullowhee to the summit of Mount Mitchell. Braving fog, inclement weather - and roads clogged with leaf-lookers - Dean Railsback undertook this arduous task to raise money for the Honors College Pledge Ride Scholarship fund.  35 such Pledge Ride scholarships have been awarded in the 10-year history of the College, thanks to six such treks.

This year, we have five Pledge Ride Scholarships to award in the amount of $1,000 each. The goal, as it has ever been, is to use the Dean's toil, sweat and tears on his Ride to reduce the amount of outside toil, sweat and tears deserving Honors students will expend in pursuit of their academic dreams.

In that the 2007 Pledge Ride may have been the final one, we take a moment to reflect on the many memorable Pledge Ride moments that have given Dean Railsback an opportunity to demonstrate his devotion through a multitude of different hazardous weather conditions - including being stranded on a mountaintop in a snowstorm! It wasn't always easy but it certainly was fun.

The Pledge Ride Scholarship Committee is part of the Honors College Student Board of Directors. If you would like to become more involved in Honors College activities, please consider serving on one of the many Student Board of Directors subcommittees. For more information, contact a current Board member or attend one of our weekly meetings every Monday evening at 5:15 pm in Reynolds 110.

The Pledge Ride Scholarship Committee is looking for enthusiastic volunteers for the 2008 season. If you are an Honors student in good standing and do not intend to apply for the Pledge Ride scholarship, you are eligible to take part in this worthy cause. Please contact one of the curent Scholarship Committee members or the Committee Chairperson: Teegan Dykeman. Duties will begin in mid-March and be completed by mid-April.
